Simple License Matrix

About the Licenses:

SLM was created because of the confusion between existing licenses, and the current “one size fits all” constraints of the legal licenses currently available to the public.  For example, if you want to give your work to the commons for mixing and showing, but still wanted to retain royalty rights to publish on iTunes, or make large corporate contracts etc, the exclusive non-commercial non-royalty legal language clearly states no royalties.  But with SLM there is always a away.  Our Simple Matrix License # 311121 and # 411121 do just that.

Additionally we are completely flexible and easily evolvable to meet the needs of any public license which is needed.  We certainly aren’t going to make a special license for a single user, but if a user needs a license that is general enough that anyone can use it, we will make it.

Our hope is to create a matrix that can be generally compatible with every existing license available to the public.  The goal is not to supersede any existing license, but to create a way for normal people to understand any license without the need to read paragraphs and pages of legal text.

SLM is not for people who want a legal protection for their work, its intention is quite the opposite, to simply communicate to the public that they want people to use their work freely under certain conditions clearly defined by the matrix.  We believe in the foundation of trust and common sense.  You see, even if you did want to sue someone in court for using your work, you would still need to officially register your work in a copyright office, and even if you do use a license with pages of legal language, anyone can still sue and question the language in court.  Thats what happens when there isn’t trust and understanding.  Will SLM have legal standing?  Well, lets just say that verbal contracts are legally binding, and in the same way our matrix based licenses communicate the intention of the originator of the work, but we always recommend that for a large scale project you link additional permissions and if necessary legal licenses to you work as well.  SLM is great for supplementing and clearly stating your additional permissions beyond the scope of a “one size fits all” legal license.

We intend never to create any legal language regarding our licenses, they are intended for people only, not lawyers.  You see, the moment we start creating legal language, is the moment our licenses no longer are compatible with other licenses, as the legal language is what make each license different enough that they don’t work with one another.  Our licenses are intended to convey and communicate the basic principles of permissions from the creator of the work to the users of the work, that is it.

About the Organization:

SLM is a Non-Profit 501c3 charitable organization.  We are part of what we call the Interdependence Network and we collaborate with Law By People which stands for law that is made for and by people, not politicians and lawyers.  We are also working to help start as Public Licensing Network to work with other public licensing organizations to better improve computability and clarity on all the different types of licenses.  Currently we are an all volunteer organization, but are dedicated to creating new licenses that are needed by users.  Please let us know how we can asset your licensing needs, and if you are interested in getting involved, please contact us.  Our organizational strategy is to strive towards consensus and be fully intractable and open to any evolution to our system.  We started June 25th, 2011 and overtime we would love to collaborate anyone who would like to make licensing easier for everybody.

This project will evolve overtime, and could take years to incorporate every type of license into the database.
